When was the last time you went on a date that wasn't dinner, drinks, or staring at a screen together?
Santa Cruz is one of those towns where the best dates don't require a reservation or a plan — just some willingness to do something a little different. The coast, the redwoods, the weird wonderful downtown strip. It's all right here. You just have to get off the default path.
Here are the date ideas in Santa Cruz that locals actually do, not the ones that show up in every tourist listicle.
Sunset at Natural Bridges
This one's obvious if you live here, but it never gets old. Drive out to Natural Bridges State Beach around golden hour, walk out to the tidepools if the tide is low, and watch the sun go down behind the arch. Bring a blanket. Bring a thermos of something warm if it's winter.
The parking lot closes at sunset, so time it right. There's no better free date in town.
Coffee and a Long Walk on West Cliff
Start at one of the coffee spots near the wharf, grab something good, and walk West Cliff Drive. The whole path runs along the coast — surfers below, pelicans overhead, and the lighthouse in the distance. You can walk as far as you want and turn around whenever.
It's low-pressure, the conversation flows naturally, and you don't have to make awkward eye contact across a table for an hour straight.
Browse the Farmers Market Together
The downtown Santa Cruz Farmers Market runs on Wednesdays. It's one of the best in the county — local produce, flowers, prepared food, live music sometimes. It's the kind of date where you wander, taste things, and see what catches your eye.
Buy some fruit. Split a tamale. Argue about whether sourdough or focaccia is better. That's the whole date.

Hike Pogonip or Henry Cowell
If you want to get into the redwoods without driving an hour, Pogonip and Henry Cowell are right here. Pogonip is open space with meadow views and shaded trails. Henry Cowell has the old-growth loop — a short walk through trees that are older than most countries.
Both are great for a morning date. Hike first, eat after.
Do a Scent Flight Together
This is our entry on the list, so take it with a grain of salt — but couples love this. A scent flight at Santa Cruz Scent is a free 15-minute fragrance experience where you smell things on your skin and figure out what you're drawn to.
It's surprisingly fun to do together. You find out your partner loves smoky cedar while you lean toward something citrusy. You disagree about a candle and it turns into a whole conversation. Plenty of couples come in to pick out a candle for their space — something they both agree on, which is apparently harder than it sounds.
We're by appointment on Soquel Ave, and you can pair it with anything else on this list. Scent flight, then coffee. Candle shopping, then dinner. It slots in easily.
Kayak or Paddleboard on the Bay
The Monterey Bay is calm enough for kayaking and paddleboarding most of the year. Rent gear from one of the spots near the wharf and get out on the water. If you're lucky, you'll see otters. If you're very lucky, you'll see dolphins.
It's active without being exhausting, and being on the water together feels more like an adventure than sitting across from each other at a restaurant.

Catch a Show Downtown
Santa Cruz has a surprisingly good live music and comedy scene for a town this size. Check what's happening at the local venues on any given weekend — you'll find indie bands, stand-up, open mics, and the occasional weird variety show that's better than it has any right to be.
Buy tickets day-of, grab dinner nearby, and walk to the venue. It beats scrolling through streaming options for 45 minutes.
The Boardwalk, but Off-Peak
Yes, the Boardwalk is touristy. But go on a weekday evening in spring or fall when it's not packed, and it's genuinely fun. Ride the Giant Dipper, eat something terrible for you, play a few arcade games. Lean into it.
The trick is going when it's not shoulder-to-shoulder. Off-peak Boardwalk is a completely different experience.
The Best Dates Are the Unplanned Ones
Santa Cruz rewards spontaneity. Some of the best dates here start with "let's just drive out to the coast" or "want to walk around downtown for a bit?" The town is small enough that you can change plans three times and still have a great night.
If you're looking for something to bring home from your next date — a candle you both picked out, a stick of Japanese incense that reminds you of a specific afternoon — stop by the shop. It's a small thing, but the right home fragrance has a way of anchoring a memory.
