You've decided to try a decant. Smart move. Now you're staring at size options — 1ml, 2ml, 5ml, 10ml — and wondering which one to pick.
The short answer: it depends on what you're trying to do. Here's a framework that makes the decision easy.
The Size Breakdown
1ml — The Taste Test
Around 10–15 sprays. Enough for one full wearing, maybe two if you're light-handed.
Best for: Getting a first impression of something you're mildly curious about. If you want to know whether a fragrance is even in the right ballpark for you, 1ml does the job.
Not ideal for: Actually living with a scent. One wearing doesn't tell you how a fragrance performs across different days, weather, and settings. You won't get the full picture.
2ml — The Solid Sample
Around 20–30 sprays. Four to seven wearings depending on how much you apply.
Best for: A proper trial run. Enough to wear a fragrance on three or four occasions and get a real feel for it. This is the minimum size if you want an honest assessment — not just a first impression.
Not ideal for: Daily wearing over an extended period. You'll run out in about a week.
5ml — The Sweet Spot
Around 50–65 sprays. Two to three weeks of daily wear, or a month-plus if you rotate.
Best for: Most people, most of the time. This is enough to truly live with a fragrance — wear it to work, wear it on the weekend, wear it in rain and sun. By the time a 5ml runs out, you'll know whether this scent belongs in your life.
Five milliliters is also the ideal size for building a rotation. You can have 5–8 different 5ml decants and rotate through them over a couple of months.
10ml — The Commitment
Over 100 sprays. Easily a month or more of daily use.
Best for: A fragrance you already know you love. Maybe you tested a smaller size and it earned a spot in your rotation. Maybe it's a scent you've worn before and you just need a refill. This is your daily driver size — the one you grab without thinking.
Also great for: Travel. A 10ml atomizer is still well within TSA limits and gives you plenty of fragrance for a long trip without packing a full bottle.
How to Decide
Ask yourself one question: What's my goal with this fragrance?
"I just want to smell it." Get 1ml. Cheap, quick, low commitment.
"I want to know if it works on me." Get 2ml or 5ml. You need multiple wearings in different contexts to answer this honestly. A single spray at a counter or from a 1ml vial isn't enough — fragrance smells different on everyone, and it changes throughout the day.
"I want to wear it regularly." Get 5ml or 10ml. If you're past the testing phase and into the wearing phase, go bigger. The per-spray cost is better and you won't run out mid-week.
"I'm exploring and want to try a bunch." Get several 2ml decants. Spread your budget across variety rather than depth. This is the fastest way to learn what you like.
A Note on Sprays Per Day
How fast you go through a decant depends entirely on your application style. Some people do one spray on the wrist and call it done. Others go full neck-chest-wrist — four or five sprays.
For reference, here's roughly how long each size lasts at 2–3 sprays per wearing:
| Size | Sprays | Wearings | Duration (daily use) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1ml | 10–15 | 3–5 | A few days |
| 2ml | 20–30 | 7–12 | About a week |
| 5ml | 50–65 | 17–25 | 2–3 weeks |
| 10ml | 100–130 | 35–50 | 1–2 months |
If you're rotating multiple scents (and you should be — variety is the point), a 5ml decant can easily last a couple of months.
When to Upgrade to a Full Bottle
A decant doesn't have to be the end of the road. It's a test drive. If you finish a 5ml or 10ml and immediately want more, that's your signal. You've earned the full bottle — you know exactly what you're getting and you know you'll use it.
The move most seasoned collectors make: start with 2ml, upgrade to 5ml if they like it, and only go full bottle on the ones they can't live without. This means every full bottle on their shelf is a proven winner, not a guess.
No pressure either way, though. Plenty of people keep a whole collection in decant sizes and never buy a full bottle. If 5ml is enough and you'd rather have 10 different scents than one big bottle, that's a perfectly valid approach.
