Some candle brands try to be mysterious. Broken Top Candle Co. just tries to smell like the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. And they're really good at it.
Based in Bend, Oregon, Broken Top is a women-owned company that hand-pours every product in small batches. Their scents pull from the landscape around them - mountain air, forest floors, coastal mornings, citrus groves. It's the kind of brand that makes sense the moment you smell it, because the inspiration is specific and real.
We carry a wide range of their products at Santa Cruz Scent, and they're consistently one of the brands that surprises people who walk in expecting "just candles."
More Than Candles
Most candle brands make candles. Broken Top makes an entire scent ecosystem.
Their core is the 9oz soy candle ($26), which burns for about 50 hours on 100% U.S.-grown soybean wax with cotton-core wicks. Vegan, phthalate-free, paraben-free, gluten-free. Clean stuff.
But where Broken Top really stands out is the product range around each scent. Take a fragrance like Sea Salt Surf or Sitka Woodland, and you can get it as a candle, a bar soap, a room and linen spray, a roll-on perfume, a beard oil, a solid cologne, or even a car air freshener. That means you can build a consistent scent profile across your home, your bathroom, and yourself - all from the same fragrance family.
It's a simple concept, but almost no other brand we carry does it this thoroughly.
The Scents Worth Knowing
Broken Top has a big lineup, so here's where to start depending on what you're drawn to.
Sea Salt Surf
Top notes of sea salt and jasmine, a sweet cream middle, and a driftwood base. This is their coastal scent, and it's one of the most popular for good reason. It smells like a crisp morning beach walk - salty but not harsh, floral but not heavy. If you're anywhere near the coast (and in Santa Cruz, you are), this one just fits.
Sitka Woodland
Dry gin and spruce on top, cedar and red currant in the middle, balsam at the base. This is the PNW in a jar. It smells like chopping wood outside a forest cabin, which is literally what the brand describes it as. If you like woody scent candles, Sitka Woodland is a must-try.
Mount Bachelor
Ozone and plum meet clove leaf and cardamom over a base of amber and vanilla. This one is named after the ski resort near Bend, and it captures that mountain-cabin-in-winter feeling. It's spiced, smooth, and genuinely gender-neutral. One of the more complex scents in their lineup and a good choice if you want something that doesn't read as obviously "candle."
Fresh Squeezed
Bergamot and blood orange with grapefruit and cedar. Bold, bright, and citrusy without being one-dimensional. The cedar base keeps it grounded. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, or anyone who wants a room to feel energized instead of sleepy.
Coconut Sandalwood
Lime and coconut on top, papaya blossom and sea salt in the middle, cedar and sandalwood at the base. Their warm, year-round crowd-pleaser. It's tropical without being kitschy - the sandalwood grounds everything and the sea salt keeps it from going too sweet. If you like the woody family but want something a little softer, this is a good bridge.
Maple Harvest
Maple and honey meet coriander and tonka. This is their fall candle, and it does the season right - warm and sweet but with enough spice and depth to avoid feeling like a candle aisle cliche. If you're looking for something seasonal without the pumpkin-spice predictability, Maple Harvest delivers.
The Austy Lou Collection
Broken Top also makes a fun sub-line called Austy Lou, built around mom-themed candles with legitimately good scents. "Ain't No Hood Like Motherhood" is a bright floral (bergamot, honeysuckle, gardenia), "In My Mom Era" leans zesty with pink grapefruit and yuzu, and "Mom Blue Fleur" is an elegant peony-and-jasmine blend. They're playful but the fragrance quality is the same as the core line.
At $22, they're also slightly less expensive than the standard candles, which makes them solid gift options.
Beyond the Candle
The bar soaps ($12) deserve a separate mention. They're made with saponified olive, coconut, and palm oils with shea butter, and they carry the scent surprisingly well. Birch Charcoal soap has activated charcoal for a deep clean and smells like eucalyptus and mint in a frosted forest. Sea Salt Surf soap leaves you smelling like you just got back from the beach.
The solid colognes ($26) and beard oils ($16) are a nice bonus - especially Sitka Woodland and Mount Bachelor in solid cologne form. They're compact, travel-friendly, and a different way to wear a fragrance you already love at home.
And the room and linen sprays ($16) are an easy way to refresh a room between candle burns. Quick, effective, same quality fragrance.
What Makes Broken Top Different
Three things stand out after carrying this brand for a while.
First, the consistency. Every candle burns evenly, the scent throw is reliable, and the quality doesn't waver between batches. That matters more than people think - inconsistency is one of the most common problems with small-batch candle brands.
Second, the range. Being able to get the same scent across six or seven product types means you can actually build a layered home fragrance setup without mixing and matching brands. It's more cohesive.
Third, the pricing. At $26 for a 50-hour soy candle, Broken Top sits in a sweet spot - nicer than grocery store candles, more affordable than the $40+ brands, and the quality holds up against anything in that higher range. The value per burn hour is genuinely hard to beat.
Who It's For
Broken Top is the brand we recommend to people who want something good without having to overthink it. The scents are approachable - you don't need a fragrance vocabulary to appreciate them. But they're also well-constructed enough that people who know candles will respect the quality.
